# Two Pacemakers, Two Lives Saved

In the history of Hope Clinic Koumé, few milestones stand as tall as our pacemaker implantation programme. In a region where advanced cardiac care was previously unavailable, our team performed two landmark procedures.

## The First Pacemaker — 2018

In 2018, a patient with severe heart block — a condition where electrical signals in the heart are interrupted — was admitted to Hope Clinic. Under the expert care of Dr. Patrice Mbarga, the clinic's cardiologist, the decision was made to implant a pacemaker.

The procedure was successful. A life was saved.

## The Second Pacemaker — 2020

Two years later, in 2020, Hope Clinic performed its second pacemaker implantation — confirming that the first success was not a one-off, but the establishment of a genuine cardiac capability in the East Region.

## What This Means for the Region

Before Hope Clinic established this capability, patients with severe heart conditions requiring pacemakers had only two options:
1. Travel to Yaoundé or Douala (8+ hours each way)
2. Go without treatment

Today, Hope Clinic Koumé offers this life-saving technology locally.

## Our Cardiac Team

Dr. Patrice Mbarga, Hope Clinic's cardiologist, trained specifically in pacemaker implantation techniques in France. His expertise, combined with the clinic's state-of-the-art cardiac monitoring equipment provided through FESIDEV partnerships, makes these procedures possible.

*"Every heartbeat that continues because of our work is a testament to God's grace and the dedication of our team."*
