# World Sickle Cell Awareness Day — June 19, 2025
Every year on June 19th, the world unites to raise awareness about sickle cell disease — one of the most common inherited blood disorders, with a significant impact on African communities.
## What is Sickle Cell Disease?
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. The abnormal "sickle-shaped" red blood cells die early, causing anaemia, severe pain crises, and organ damage. In Cameroon and the East Region, the disease affects many families.
